William A. Scott MD FHRS FAACC FAAP: EKGs do not need to be performed for ADHD children. In the past, concerns were raised about voluntary reporting of incidents in children with unrecognized cardiac disease.
Most children can safely take these medications without concern. An evaluation is required if the family has a history or significant arrhythmias or congenital heart disease.
The need to screen children has been the subject of much debate. Large organizations like the American Academy of Pediatrics and American College of Cardiology have reached consensus on recommendations. Experts and physicians reviewed all available data and concluded that an EKG is not necessary for patients who are starting these medications.
