Ketamine is a very powerful anesthetic drug that’s made it’s way into psychiatry. This video explains how Ketamine can be used to treat depression.
On the streets, Ketamine is called special K. It is a hallucinogen that induces dissociation. This is a feeling of being detached from your surroundings. It is a drug that is used primarily to maintain and start anesthesia in clinical medicine.
2000 The first controlled randomized trial to test Ketamine for depression showed a rapid improvement. The FDA has not yet approved it for use in depression. We need to do more research and get more information about the safety of long-term use. Currently, we use it for IV infusions to treat depression. Recently, Spravato was approved for use in treating treatment-resistant depression. It can be used in conjunction with an antidepressant.
